How to Decorate Today’s Living Room: Style (Part 3/3)

Style

Now that the function of your living room has been established, it’s time to consider design style. The design style of your living room should be coherent to the rest of your home. Polanco usually recommends maintaining a consistent style throughout your home. For example you wouldn’t typically suggest decorating a living room in a modern style within a classic home as it would feel out of place.

For a classic style approach to living room design, Polanco would recommend classic or traditional furniture pieces such as sofas, love seats etc. with neutral upholstery for example taupes, darker greys, creams etc. Fabrics suitable for this style would include velvets, crushed velvets and velours. Generally this style is more formal and structured and therefore Polanco would recommend firmer fills in seatbacks and pillows as in the Annex sofa from MarcAntonio or the 1064 chair from Future Fine Furniture. Tables would include darker stains and are bench-made in cherry or maple. Coffee tables suitable for this style would include the Demilune table from Handstone in solid maple or cherry or the fluted leg table from Camlen in Birch or Pine. Table lamps are more elaborate and are often wood-based or mix brass/bronze.

For a modern style approach to living room design, Polanco Home Furniture & Interior Decor Solutions would recommend more recent furnishing styles. Some suggested solutions would include using a light or neutral colour palette, for example white, lighter greys, creams etc. Furniture selections might include sectionals and other modular furniture such as the Swank or Inspiration sofas from MarcAntonio. Coffee tables suitable in this solution would include the Stockholm table from Handstone in maple or the Albany from Artage in metal and glass. This design style would also include very clean lines, chrome and metal accents and/or glass lamps from Robert Abbey lighting.

However, that doesn’t mean styles can’t be combined necessarily. Another challenge Polanco has seen among its clients has been the requirement to design a living room space around certain furniture and decor items such as family heirlooms that must be kept. Generally family heirlooms such as coffee tables, buffets etc. are of a more classic style, these items can be paired with more modern design features very well. In Polanco’s experience providing modern solutions such as sectionals, tables with metal accents, glass lamps etc. to match an older more classic styled furniture piece can achieve a very timeless appeal. That said, it can be more difficult to provide classic/contemporary solutions based around modern items. This case is much more unusual however.

Regardless of what you use your living room for, this common area is a substantial contribution to the decor in your home. Whether you’re designing in a more classic/contemporary style, using newer, more modern design elements, or up to the challenge of mixing these two design styles, Polanco Home Furniture & Interior Decor Solutions can develop the perfect interior decor solution for you.
