Our latest featured client project is an elegant contemporary home located in Manotick, Ontario. We chose to focus on the importance of continuity in this large open-concept space. We were able to start the project with a clean slate as we were working with an unfurnished newly built home. Therefore, were able to achieve our goal of creating a fresh look for our clients. To achieve this, we selected light coloured furniture to contrast with the darker hardwood throughout the living spaces. We achieved our client’s vision by selecting a blend of contemporary and classic furniture pieces, upholstered and finished in modern colours and textures. It was a high priority for this young family to have comfort and quality in their new home. By selecting all Canadian made furniture, we were able to accomplish this goal while giving them a stylish new look.
In the family room, the upholstery colour on the sofas we selected is a neutral tone. We placed two Inspiration sofas from Marcantonio Designs along each wall to the left and right of the fire place in order to maintain the open concept feel of the room. These sofas offer a unique form of reclining with all six seats using a sliding mechanism to convert each sofa seats into loungers. To accompany the sofas, we selected two Maxwell chairs in a plush grey fabric, again from Marcantonio Designs. The material we chose is durable and ideal for a high traffic space. The feather blend seats and backs of the chairs create a relaxed and inviting feel. This space was designed to allow for eight people to sit comfortably for television viewing, engaging in conversation, as well as enjoying the fireplace. We placed a custom tapered leg Sugar Hill coffee table from Camlen Furniture in the centre of the room to ground the space. To tie it all together, we selected a tone-on-tone area rug which brings warmth and softness to the room. We placed the furniture and area rug in this part of the room to create a division between the open plan family room, living room, and kitchen, in order to clearly define the different areas. To finish off the room, we added colour and pattern with the use of our custom made toss cushions in refreshing Robert Allen fabrics. Toss cushions help to create an inviting look and feel to your space, and are a great way to add design and flair!
After the clients moved in, we decided to change the look of the fireplace. We collaborated with Studio S Interiors on the transformation of this special feature. We selected a light textured stone to replace the harsh black granite. By changing one small feature in this room, it completely transformed the space. All the furniture we had previously selected for the room now blended together seamlessly.
For the living room, we chose the curved Kensington sofas from Marcantonio Designs in a grey-taupe leather. A custom round Rotolo ottoman in a Robert Allen fabric was designed to fit perfectly in the curve of the two sofas. We opted for an ottoman without legs to create a visual break with all the numerous other furniture pieces in the area. Opposite the curved sofas, we chose a pair of Capricorn chairs in an elegant crushed velvet fabric. The curved back of these chairs perfectly complements the curves of the other pieces, and softens the space as it can be viewed from the home’s front entrance. The combination of all the furniture in this room create softness in a very angular space, creating an inviting atmosphere.
To refresh the kitchen, we replaced the existing fixtures above the island with classic contemporary lantern style Warwick pendants from Robert Abbey Lighting. We chose the largest available sized lantern to balance with the length of the island counter and the 10’ ceilings. In the adjoining kitchen dining area, we selected the glamorous Bling oval chandelier – also from Robert Abbey. Both fixtures, in a chrome silver finish, complement the other metal finishes used in the kitchen (example: cabinet knobs, appliances, etc.). Centred underneath the fixture we placed a four legged solid birch dining table from Camlen Furniture in a dark cocoa stain. We paired the table with soft white leather parsons chairs from Handstone Furniture. Leather was the ideal choice for a dining space as it can be easily cleaned and maintained. We chose custom artwork throughout the space to create interest and splashes of colour.
The dining room, suitable in size for entertaining large groups, is an important part of this family’s home. After repainting, we added an elegant Schonbek crystal light fixture above the dining table. This rectangular-shaped fixture complements the shape and size of the dining table. The Contempo Pedestal table, from Handstone Furniture, accompanied with all white leather Remi dining chairs from Marcantonio Designs. The silver nail heads on the chairs add a touch of elegance and flair. We designed a custom china cabinet to showcase the client’s beautiful collection of china and dishware. On the opposite wall we selected a buffet in a different style, however, by finishing all pieces in the same stain colour, we created cohesiveness in the space. We accessorized the room with a decorative bar cart from Artage International which is decorative and practical for entertaining purposes.
The dining room is visible from the front entrance of the home. We selected the custom Remi bench to continue the same style from the entrance to the dining room. We upholstered the bench in the same white leather as the dining chairs to achieve a harmonious look between the two rooms. The Remi bench can be used in the entrance to sit down when putting on shoes, and can be brought into the dining room for extra seating when our clients expand their dining table for entertaining.
After completing some minor decorating changes throughout the remaining rooms on the main floor, our clients now have a home that flows seamlessly together from room to room. We are proud to have provided our clients with exceptionally made furniture pieces that will be enjoyed by friends and family for years to come.
