How to Decorate Today’s Living Room: Function (Part 2/3)

Function

The functionality of the living room varies extensively depending on the client’s home, personal taste, style etc. Traditionally, you wouldn’t necessarily see entertainment units in a living room, however, today’s modern home might only have one “common room” and would therefore include perhaps a television or sound system. In either case, the design and style of the living room really depends on its function and whether or not this space should be formal vs. informal.

Generally, lighting is another important concern in living room design. In order to entertain guests or read a book you require ample lighting in the evening. One configuration style that Polanco recommends is referred to as “floating furniture.” In this case, furniture is placed away from walls. However this represents a challenge as wires for lamps should be hidden. In the case where there are no floor outlets, furniture should be closer to the walls so as to prevent loose wires. In either configuration, the room should be functional without reducing flow or visibility.

Once the technical and functional aspects of the room are considered, you can move on to creating an interior decor solution for your living room that will transform this space to not only best serve its function, but also look and feel beautiful.
